BSc Marine Science
University of Otago
Course Overview
Otago's BSc Marine Science is New Zealand's most comprehensive undergraduate marine programme, taught from the Portobello Marine Laboratory and Research Aquarium on the Otago Peninsula. The 3-year degree combines marine biology, oceanography, marine ecology, fisheries science and aquaculture. Students get field-based learning from year 1: rocky-shore ecology at Sandfly Bay, deep-sea sampling on the RV Polaris II research vessel, and a Stewart Island residential field course in year 3. Otago Marine Science is ranked in the global top 50 for Earth and Marine Sciences in QS Rankings.
Sri Lankan applicants — particularly those interested in coral reef ecology, fisheries management (relevant to Sri Lanka's NARA / coastal management priorities), and aquaculture (responding to declining wild fisheries) — choose Otago for the equipment access, the small cohort (typically 30-40 students per year), and the close pipeline into PhD positions at Otago, Auckland, JCU Townsville and the Australian Institute of Marine Science. The degree is also a feeder to MFAT-funded marine policy roles.
