The budget play · Verified 2026-05-14
A full European master's can cost what a single UK year does.
Germany and Norway public universities charge little to no tuition, even for non-EU students. Netherlands and Ireland English-taught master's run €10,000–€18,000/year. A 2-year program with living costs included can come in under LKR 9M total — the strongest value play in the developed world.
Realistic Year 1 total
LKR 2.5M – 9M / year
LKR figures use an indicative rate of EUR 1 ≈ LKR 340. Verify the live rate with your bank before transferring funds.

Where your money actually goes
Forget the headline number for a moment. Studying in Europe has four cost buckets — and three of them are negotiable.
University
Tuition
Negotiable via scholarship choice, university choice and level of study. The biggest single number on the page.
Your control
Living costs
Rent, food, transport. Choosing a smaller city can save the equivalent of a year's tuition over a 3-year degree.
Fixed
One-time pre-departure
Visa, tests, flights, initial deposits. Same for everyone — plan with buffer; don't be surprised.
Government / required
Health & admin
Health insurance, residency cards, mandatory deposits. Not negotiable — but the cheapest provider can save a lot.
What you pay the university
Ranges below cover every Europe institution Lanka Scholar partners with. The lower end is regional / public universities; the upper end is elite institutions. Your tuition is set by where you apply — and how aggressively you target scholarships.

|---|---|

Your single biggest variable
City choice is the lever Sri Lankan families most often underuse. Over a 3-year degree, choosing a smaller city instead of the capital can save the equivalent of a full year's tuition — for the same Europe qualification.

One-Time Pre-Departure Costs
Four ways to bring the number down
The headline figure is the starting line, not the finish line. Every Sri Lankan student who lands in Europe has pulled at least two of these levers.
Germany public unis are essentially free
Bavaria reintroduced €3,000/year for non-EU students in 2024, but most other German states remain free. Only the semester contribution (€150–€350) is mandatory — and that includes regional transport.
savings Saves LKR 5M+ / year vs UKBlocked account is a deposit, not a cost
The €11,904 in your Sperrkonto is released to you at €992/month after arrival. It funds your living costs — it doesn't disappear.
savings Returned: LKR 4M over Year 1English-taught programs cost more
A German-taught master's at TU Munich is free; the same program in English at a private partner can be €15,000/year. Trade-off: 6 months of B2 German learning vs. LKR 5M/year saved for the next 2 years.
savings Saves LKR 5M / yearErasmus exchange for free travel
Master's students enrolled in any EU university can spend 3–12 months at a partner university across Europe with full credit transfer — often the cheapest way to live in two countries.

How we keep these numbers honest
Four things you should know before you trust this page.
Exchange rate stated
All LKR figures use the rate noted in the hero. Live rates fluctuate; we update this page quarterly. Last verified: 2026-05-14.
Universities pay us — never you
Lanka Scholar earns a commission from universities when you enrol. You pay tuition and fees directly to the institutions. There is no service fee, registration fee, or agent fee from us.
Ranges, not promises
Tuition and living costs vary by university and city. We've given the realistic middle 80% — not the cheapest possible or most expensive.

How scholarships change this math
DAAD (Germany), Eiffel (France), Holland Scholarship and Erasmus+ Mundus offer fully-funded master's programs with significant Sri Lankan participation. Many European public universities also waive tuition for PhD candidates and pay a research stipend (€1,800–€3,000/month) — typically classified as employment, not study.

Is the Sperrkonto money really refundable? expand_more
Yes — once you arrive in Germany and activate your blocked account, €992/month is released to you for 12 months. It's your living-cost funding, not a fee. Expatrio, Fintiba and Deutsche Bank all offer this with a small setup fee (€50–100). -
Can I really study free in Germany without speaking German? expand_more
Yes, in English-taught programs — but selection is competitive and most free programs are German-taught. The cheapest path is: B2-level German + admission to a public uni in a non-Bavaria state. -
What's the post-study work situation in the EU? expand_more
Germany gives 18 months post-study work; Netherlands and Ireland 12 months. The Schengen area also means once you have residency in one EU country, intra-EU job moves are simpler than between any other set of countries. -
Can my partner come with me? expand_more
Yes. Germany, Netherlands and Ireland all allow dependent visas for spouses, with work rights in most cases. Schengen mobility benefits the partner too. -
How do I prove the funds for the Sperrkonto? expand_more
Family transfer, fixed deposit liquidation, or education loan — all accepted as long as the money sits in the blocked account before your visa interview. We help structure the source-of-funds documentation.
