If you applied through the Student Direct Stream, you already have a Canadian bank relationship — your GIC is held at Scotiabank, CIBC, ICICI, or Habib. The GIC bank is your default chequing account on arrival, but it may not be the best long-term choice for daily banking, mortgage / loan facility, or branch convenience in your study city. Here is the full picture for Sri Lankan students setting up Canadian banking.
Canadian bank international student programmes are well-established but yearly promotions vary widely. Compare sign-up bonuses, fee waivers, and credit-card eligibility within 30 days of flying.
Canadian banks worth considering
- check_circle Scotiabank StartRight Program — most common for SDS students (where the GIC is held); largest international student programme; 1 year free chequing; branches in most Ontario / BC cities
- check_circle RBC Newcomer Program — strong international student programme; first 12 months free; widest credit-card-for-newcomers offering
- check_circle TD Canada Trust New to Canada — strong app; large branch network across Ontario / BC / Alberta; competitive newcomer credit card
- check_circle BMO NewStart Program — comparable to TD; 1 year free banking; popular for Toronto / Montreal
- check_circle CIBC Smart Account for Newcomers — also offers SDS GIC; 1 year free banking
- check_circle National Bank — strong in Quebec; less common elsewhere
- check_circle Digital alternatives — Tangerine (Scotiabank-owned), Simplii (CIBC-owned), EQ Bank — good secondary accounts; less seamless for daily banking
Recommended default: stick with Scotiabank if you already used their GIC; otherwise choose by branch density in your study city. RBC has the strongest national network; TD is dominant in Ontario; BMO is strong in Toronto / Montreal.
Already with Scotiabank via SDS GIC?
If you used Scotiabank for your GIC, your StartRight chequing account is activated when you visit a branch within the first 1–2 weeks of landing. Bring your passport, study permit, GIC Investment Directive, Sri Lankan address (kept on file), and Canadian accommodation. The branch officer activates the chequing account, issues a debit card on the spot, and walks you through the GIC monthly release schedule.
This is the cleanest banking onboarding of any major destination — the GIC + chequing setup means you have AUD-equivalent of CAD 1,700+ in your account on Day 1 of activation. Apply for the Scotiabank Newcomer credit card 4–6 weeks after the chequing account is open (no Canadian credit history needed for the newcomer card).
Alternative bank choices (not GIC-tied)
If your study city or programme makes another bank a better fit, you can open a second account in addition to or instead of the GIC bank. Most international students keep the GIC bank account for the GIC release schedule and then open a second account with their preferred bank for daily use.
RBC, TD, and BMO all let you book pre-arrival international student appointments. The pre-arrival application is done online; the in-branch activation is required after landing. Some banks issue a debit card to your Canadian address before you arrive (Scotiabank via the StartRight programme) or on the day of in-branch activation.
On-arrival setup process
In your first 1–2 weeks: visit a branch of your chosen bank (or Scotiabank for GIC), bring documents (see list below), activate the chequing account, and ask about the newcomer credit card — most banks issue these without Canadian credit history but with a small credit limit (CAD 500–1,500 initially). The credit card is essential for building Canadian credit history; without it, you cannot easily apply for an apartment lease, mobile-phone contract, or future loans.
Get your Social Insurance Number (SIN) before banking activation if possible — visit any Service Canada office in your first week with passport + study permit. SIN application is free and same-day. The bank will ask for SIN to apply interest tax correctly.
Documents you need
- check_circle Passport with valid Canadian study permit
- check_circle Study permit (issued at the border or airport on arrival)
- check_circle GIC Investment Directive (if you used the GIC route)
- check_circle Letter of Acceptance (LOA) from your DLI
- check_circle Canadian address proof — accommodation contract, university dorm confirmation, or homestay address
- check_circle SIN (Social Insurance Number) — apply at Service Canada in week 1; not strictly required to open the account but needed for the bank to file proper tax forms
- check_circle Initial deposit — CAD 50–500 minimum; the chequing account opens with as little as CAD 1
Transfers from Sri Lanka
Sri Lankan bank wire transfers to Canada typically take 3–7 working days, cost LKR 5,000–10,000 in fees, and lose 1.5–2.5% to forex margin. For a CAD 10,000 transfer: total cost roughly LKR 2,400,000 (including margin). Wise offers materially better forex (0.4–0.7% margin) and 1–2 day delivery; for ongoing post-arrival transfers from Sri Lanka, Wise is the strongest option.
For very large transfers (CAD 25,000+ for first-year tuition), get quotes from at least 2 Sri Lankan banks AND from Wise — savings can exceed LKR 100,000 on a single transaction.
Pro Counsellor Tip
"
If you are doing the SDS route, apply for the Scotiabank Newcomer credit card 4–6 weeks after activating your chequing account. Use it for small recurring payments (Netflix, mobile plan, groceries) and pay in full monthly — this builds Canadian credit history in 6 months, which makes everything from apartment rentals to phone contracts dramatically easier in your second semester.
