Subclass 500 Student Visa · Verified 2026-05-14
Australia's Subclass 500 visa is decided by a 600-word essay.
The Genuine Student (GS) requirement — which replaced GTE in March 2024 — is now the single most important piece of writing in your application. It explains who you are, why this course, why Australia, and why you'll return. Most Subclass 500 refusals trace back to a weak or copy-paste GS statement.

The one thing that decides it
The Genuine Student (GS) statement
Since March 2024, the Department of Home Affairs replaced the Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) test with a new Genuine Student (GS) requirement. The shift is subtle but important: officers now assess whether you're a genuine student, not just whether you'll leave. The 500–800 word personal statement is where they decide.
- check_circle Lead with your specific reason for THIS course at THIS university — not Australia in general.
- check_circle Tie your course to your career back in Sri Lanka — concrete employer / industry / family business.
- check_circle Address any course-history switches head-on. Don't hope the officer won't notice — they always do.
- check_circle Never reuse a friend's GS statement. Home Affairs sees the patterns; identical structures get refused.
Who can apply for the Subclass 500 Student Visa
Eligibility is the easy part — most denied applications fail on documentation or interview prep, not eligibility. Make sure all of these are cleared before you book anything.
Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE)
Issued by your Australian institution after you accept your offer and pay the required tuition deposit.
Genuine Student (GS) Statement
A signed statement (which replaced the GTE in March 2024) covering your circumstances in Sri Lanka, why this course / university / Australia, and your post-study plans.
Financial capacity
Funds for tuition + AUD 29,710/year living + AUD 10,394 for a spouse + AUD 4,449 per child + return airfare. Bank statements or sponsor declaration; funds must be settled (not recently deposited).
English language
IELTS 6.0 (no band below 5.5) for direct entry to most undergraduate / postgraduate programs.
OSHC health cover
Overseas Student Health Cover for the entire visa duration, arranged before applying.
What you'll submit

Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE)
Issued by your Australian university after you accept your offer and pay the initial tuition deposit.
Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE)
A statement of purpose explaining why you intend to study in Australia and return home — critical for Sri Lankan applicants.
OSHC Health Cover
Overseas Student Health Cover for the entire duration of your visa, arranged before you apply.
Financial Evidence
Proof of funds for 12 months of tuition + AUD 29,710 living costs + return airfare.
The 6-step application, in order
Doing these in the wrong order is the second-most-common reason files slip a semester. Numbers matter.
- 1
Accept offer & pay deposit
Most Australian universities require a tuition deposit (usually 50%) before issuing your CoE.
- 2
Buy OSHC
Choose a provider (Bupa, Medibank, Allianz, NIB) and pay for the full visa duration upfront.
- 3
Draft the GS statement
A 500–800 word personal statement. We help draft and review this — it is the most-rejected component of any Subclass 500 file.
- 4
Complete medical exam
Book at IOM Colombo. Results upload directly to your immi account.
- 5
Submit online application
Apply via ImmiAccount. Pay the AUD 2,000+ visa fee and upload all supporting documents.
- 6
Biometrics & decision
Some applications require biometrics at the VFS Colombo office. Decision in 4–6 weeks typically.
Visa fees & costs
These are visa-specific costs only. Tuition and living costs are covered in our full cost guide for Australia .
Visa Fee Summary
Why Australia student visas get refused
Most refusals come down to these four problems. Knowing them before you submit is the single biggest difference between approval and refusal.
Weak GS statement
Generic, copy-paste Genuine Student statements that don't explain your specific circumstances and study choices.
Funds not "settled"
Large unexplained deposits in the 3 months before applying — Home Affairs wants to see settled, long-held funds.
Course-history mismatch
A bachelor in commerce followed by a master in engineering with no bridging — needs clear justification.
Sponsor capacity
Sponsor income too low relative to declared funds — needs supporting tax returns and business documentation.
How we keep Australia applications watertight
Four things we do for every Sri Lankan Australia file before it goes near the embassy or immigration portal.
GS statement drafting & review
We draft your Genuine Student statement from scratch with you over a 1-hour call. Reviewed by two counsellors before it is submitted. No template copy-paste.
Funds-settled documentation
Home Affairs flags large recent deposits. We structure your funds proof so the bank statements show stable, long-held money — not a sudden top-up before submission.
Health & character document handling
IOM medical exam booking, police certificate from Colombo, and biometrics scheduling at VFS — all coordinated so the immi account submission is in one clean upload.
Refusal recovery if it happens
If your Subclass 500 is refused, we read the Department of Home Affairs' refusal letter, diagnose the GS or financial concern, rewrite, and resubmit.

Three anonymised journeys from this year. Names changed; outcomes real.
Imasha — BEng Mechanical Engineering, Adelaide
Imasha's GS statement linked her engineering interests to her family's construction business in Galle. We restructured her funds proof to show 4 months of held savings rather than a recent transfer.
