TU München Deutschlandstipendium
The Deutschlandstipendium is Germany's national merit-based scholarship — half-funded by private sponsors and half by the federal government — paying EUR 300 per month for two semesters (one academic year, EUR 3,600 total) on top of any other funding the student may receive. It runs across all German universities; the TUM-administered version is one of the largest, with around 1,300 awards each year split across Bachelor's, Master's, and PhD students. Sri Lankan students already studying at TUM (or starting in the upcoming year) are eligible and apply through TUM's online portal each summer.

Enrolled or About to Enrol at TUM
You must be enrolled at TUM, or hold an admission letter for the upcoming Winter Semester, at the time of application. Open across Bachelor's, Master's, and Doctoral level students.
Outstanding Academic Performance
Top academic results in your current programme or your most recent qualification. For Sri Lankan applicants starting a Bachelor's, this means strong A/L results; for Master's applicants, a first-class or strong upper second-class Bachelor's; for PhD, a strong Master's.
Leadership or Social Engagement
The Deutschlandstipendium explicitly weighs extracurricular impact alongside grades — student council, sports captaincy, volunteer work, NGO involvement, religious community service, or other measurable social contributions count.
Open to All Nationalities
There is no nationality restriction. Sri Lankan citizens enrolled at TUM are equally eligible. The award can be held alongside most other scholarships (with limited exceptions for some BAföG and DAAD awards).

Wait for the annual call
TUM opens the Deutschlandstipendium online portal each year in late June or early July, with the application window running through mid-October. Watch the TUMonline portal and your TUM email.
Submit the online application
Complete the online application — academic transcripts, CV, motivation letter (around 500 words), and evidence of extracurricular engagement. Sri Lankan applicants typically attach scanned A/L or Bachelor's transcripts with English translations.
Selection by TUM committee
TUM's central scholarship committee reviews applications November–December. The selection criteria are roughly 60% academic performance, 40% extracurricular engagement and social commitment.
Award start in winter semester
Successful applicants are notified in December–January. The EUR 300 monthly payment runs from the winter semester through to the following summer semester (12 months total). Renewal in subsequent years requires reapplication.
Why TU München?
TUM is consistently the top German university and one of the world's leading technical universities — strong across engineering, computer science, natural sciences, medicine, and management. Munich's location in the heart of Bavaria gives access to a high concentration of German industry (BMW, Siemens, Allianz) for placements.
