Institute of Tourism Studies (ITS) Malta International Scholarship

The Institute of Tourism Studies is Malta's national school for hospitality and tourism, established in 1987 and now based at a purpose-built campus in Smart City Malta. It teaches diplomas and Bachelor's degrees in hospitality management, culinary arts, pastry, food and beverage, travel and tourism operations, and event management, all in English, with industry placements embedded in the programmes. Malta matters for this subject specifically: tourism accounts for a substantial share of the national economy, the island runs a dense concentration of four- and five-star properties for its size, and placements are correspondingly easy to arrange. Note the honest caveat that applies across Malta — several of the well-known Maltese government scholarship schemes (Endeavour, Reach High, TESS) are tied to residency or employment conditions that most Sri Lankan applicants will not meet, so the institution's own support is the realistic route.

Motivation for the Industry

ITS assesses commitment to a hospitality career alongside grades. Prior kitchen, front-office, restaurant or resort experience in Sri Lanka strengthens both admission and the scholarship case.

Malta's Other Schemes Are Residency-Linked

Endeavour, Reach High and TESS are Maltese government schemes generally tied to Maltese or EU residency or employment. Do not build a budget around them as an incoming Sri Lankan student — confirm eligibility directly before counting on any of them.

English Proficiency

IELTS 5.5-6.0 depending on programme level, with waivers where prior study was in the English medium. Malta is an English-speaking country, which removes the language barrier that Southern European destinations often carry.

account_tree Application Process

1

Choose the programme level

Decide between diploma and degree-level entry, and submit any prior hospitality qualifications for credit assessment before applying — this can shorten the programme and reduce total cost significantly.

2

Submit the application

  • Certified O-Level or A-Level results and transcripts
  • Passport copy
  • Motivation letter setting out your hospitality career intent
  • CV with any industry experience
3

Ask about scholarship and fee support

Contact the international office directly about current scholarship or fee-reduction schemes for non-EU students and get any award confirmed in writing in the offer letter.

4

Malta student visa

Apply for the Maltese national visa with the acceptance letter, proof of accommodation, health insurance and evidence of sufficient funds. Processing from Sri Lanka typically takes eight to twelve weeks, so start early.

5

Understand work and post-study rules

Non-EU students in Malta may apply for a work permit after an initial period of study, usually capped at 20 hours a week. Confirm the current rules and the post-study options with Identità Malta before you rely on either.

Why ITS Malta?

The Institute of Tourism Studies is Malta's dedicated national hospitality and tourism school, teaching from a purpose-built campus at Smart City with training restaurants and kitchens on site. Malta is an English-speaking EU member state with a tourism sector that is disproportionately large relative to its population, which makes industry placement and part-time hospitality work unusually accessible.
