Master of Laws (LLM)
University of Toronto
Course Overview
The University of Toronto's Master of Laws (LLM) is delivered by the Faculty of Law — ranked No. 1 in Canada and among the world's top 20 law schools in the QS subject tables. The one-year graduate programme lets students design a specialisation across fields such as international and comparative law, business law, tax, constitutional law, law and technology, and innovation, supervised by a world-leading faculty. Toronto is Canada's financial and legal capital, home to the Bay Street firms and major corporate headquarters, giving exceptional access to research, networking, and recruitment.
Sri Lankan applicants — law graduates from the Faculty of Law at Colombo, Sri Lanka Law College attorneys, and LLB holders from UK / Australian programmes — choose the U of T LLM for its global standing and the option to qualify toward Canadian legal practice (via the NCA accreditation route). An English-medium LLB typically supports an IELTS waiver via an MOI letter. Graduates qualify for the Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP, typically up to 18 months for a one-year master's), a recognised pathway toward permanent residence. Returnees with a Toronto LLM are highly valued at top Colombo commercial firms (Julius & Creasy, F.J. & G. de Saram, Nithya Partners), corporate legal departments at John Keells, Dialog, and Brandix, and in international arbitration and compliance.
