Sri Lanka is on the UK’s list of countries whose residents must take a tuberculosis (TB) test before a long-stay visa. It’s a quick, routine step — but students who leave it late or visit the wrong clinic can lose weeks. Here’s how to get it right the first time.
Clinic details, prices, and which examinations apply can change. Always confirm the current approved-clinic list and fees on the official GOV.UK page (linked below) before booking, and check your destination’s specific health requirements.
Who needs a TB test?
For the UK, if you are a resident of Sri Lanka applying to come to the UK for more than six months — which covers virtually every student — you must obtain a TB test certificate from a UK-approved clinic before you apply. The certificate confirms you are clear of infectious TB.
For Australia, a chest X-ray (and sometimes a fuller medical examination) is part of the standard health check, done at an approved panel clinic rather than a TB-specific one. Other countries vary — some require a full medical only for longer courses or certain fields like nursing.
Where to take it (the part people get wrong)
For the UK, the test only counts if done at a UK-approved clinic. A test at your regular GP or a random private hospital will be rejected, even if the X-ray is perfect. The approved provider in Sri Lanka operates from Colombo (historically the IOM clinic). Always pull the current approved-clinic address from the official GOV.UK list before you travel to one.
- check_circle UK: book only at a clinic on the GOV.UK approved-TB-clinic list (Colombo)
- check_circle Australia: use a Department-of-Home-Affairs panel clinic; you'll usually get a referral (HAP ID) first
- check_circle Bring your passport and visa application details to the appointment
What the test involves
For applicants aged 11 and over it is normally a chest X-ray. If the X-ray is clear, you get your certificate, often the same day or within a few days. If anything needs follow-up, sputum tests may be required, which take longer — another reason not to leave it to the last week.
Pro Counsellor Tip
"
Pregnant applicants can usually still be assessed — tell the clinic in advance so they can use an alternative to a standard X-ray. Don’t skip the test assuming you can’t take it; ask the clinic about your options.
"Cost and validity
The UK TB test fee is a fixed clinic charge (budget a modest amount in LKR — confirm the current price when booking). The certificate is valid for 6 months from the date of issue, so time it to fall within that window before your visa application and travel — not so early that it expires.
Not sure if you need a TB test?
Tell us your destination and course length and we'll confirm whether a TB test or medical applies, and help you time it so the certificate is still valid when you apply.

Next steps
The TB test is one of the easiest steps to get right and one of the most annoying to get wrong. Tell us your destination and intake and we’ll fold the health check into your overall visa timeline so it never becomes the thing that holds you up.
