An online degree from a UK or Australian university — earned from your bedroom in Sri Lanka, at a fraction of the cost of flying out — sounds ideal. For some students it genuinely is. But online and distance degrees come with one big question that decides everything: will it be recognised where you need it? Here’s the honest guide.

The appeal is real

Online and distance degrees have genuine advantages, and they’ve improved a lot:

The catch: recognition

Here’s what determines whether it’s worth it — does the body that matters to you recognise it?

Distinguish genuine universities from “degree mills”

A reputable online degree comes from an accredited, established university that also teaches on campus and is recognised in its home country. Accreditation in the home country is the baseline test.

When online makes sense — and when it doesn’t

Online suits upskilling, career advancement while working, and accessible study for those who can’t relocate — provided you’ve confirmed recognition for your purpose. It’s usually the wrong choice if your goal needs the full on-campus experience: a post-study work visa and migration pathway (these require studying in the country), professional licensing that demands in-person/clinical training, or the networking and campus immersion that an in-person degree gives. Match the mode to the goal.

A reputable online or distance foreign degree can be a cost-effective, flexible route — especially for working professionals — but recognition is the make-or-break factor. Verify it with the UGC, your regulator, or your target university for your specific purpose before enrolling, and steer well clear of degree mills.
