Japan combines world-class universities, strong engineering and research, and a culture many Sri Lankans are drawn to — and the Japanese Government’s MEXT scholarship makes studying there genuinely affordable. It’s fully funded, open to several study levels, and applied for right here through the Embassy in Colombo.
Scholarship categories, stipends, and deadlines change each year and the eligible fields differ by category. The details below are general guidance only — always confirm current requirements and dates with the Embassy of Japan in Sri Lanka before applying.
What MEXT covers
The Monbukagakusho (MEXT) scholarship is one of the most generous government scholarships in the world. A full award typically includes:
- check_circle Full tuition at a Japanese university
- check_circle A monthly living stipend for the duration of your programme
- check_circle Round-trip airfare between Sri Lanka and Japan
- check_circle Often a preparatory Japanese-language period before your main studies
The main categories for Sri Lankans
MEXT runs several streams. The ones most relevant to Sri Lankan students applying via the embassy route are:
- check_circle Undergraduate students — for those entering a Japanese bachelor's degree
- check_circle Research students — for master's and PhD-level study (the most common route for graduates)
- check_circle Specialised training college and college of technology streams — for vocational/technical pathways
Note that some categories carry field conditions — for instance, certain undergraduate places ask you to study a subject related to Japanese language or culture — so read the category requirements carefully.
The embassy-recommendation route
The cleanest path for Sri Lankans is the Embassy Recommendation route. You apply through the Embassy of Japan in Sri Lanka (in Colombo), and the embassy handles document screening, written examinations, and interviews. Crucially:
- check_circle Submit your application to the Embassy of Japan in Sri Lanka — never directly to MEXT in Japan
- check_circle Expect a multi-stage selection: document screening, then written tests and an interview
- check_circle Schedules differ by nationality, so always confirm the Sri Lanka-specific timeline with the embassy
Pro Counsellor Tip
"
Deadlines for the embassy route generally fall early in the year — roughly the first quarter — for study starting the following Japanese academic year (which begins in April). That means you’re applying well over a year ahead of arrival. Mark the embassy’s annual announcement and prepare your documents long before it opens.

We'll help you work out which MEXT category fits your level and field, prepare your documents, and plan around the Embassy of Japan in Colombo's annual timeline.
Discuss MEXTDo you need Japanese?
Not necessarily to start. Many graduate programmes are taught in English, and MEXT often funds a preparatory Japanese-language period for awardees. That said, some Japanese ability strengthens your application and your daily life — and a genuine interest in Japan comes through clearly in interviews, which are part of the selection.
How to be competitive
MEXT selection weighs academic results, your field and study plan, and your performance in the written tests and interview. The strongest applicants have a clear, specific research or study plan, solid grades, and a credible reason for choosing Japan and their chosen field. A vague “I want to study in Japan” rarely survives the interview stage.
The bottom line
MEXT is a fully-funded, prestigious route to study in Japan that many Sri Lankan students overlook. Choose the right category, apply through the Embassy in Colombo, prepare for a multi-stage selection, and start at least a year ahead — the timeline is long but the reward is one of the best-funded scholarships available.
