Fulbright is the most prestigious route a Sri Lankan can take to a US master’s — and it’s fully funded. It’s also genuinely competitive and rewards a very particular kind of applicant. Here’s how the Master’s award works and how to give yourself a real chance.

info

Scholarship terms, eligibility, and deadlines change each cycle. The details below are for guidance only — always confirm the current requirements and dates on the official Fulbright Sri Lanka website before applying.

What it is

The Fulbright Master’s Degree Scholarship, administered by the United States–Sri Lanka Fulbright Commission, funds a small number of outstanding Sri Lankans to pursue a master’s degree at a US university. It’s a flagship cultural-exchange programme, not just a fee waiver — selection weighs academic excellence, leadership, and the potential to contribute back in Sri Lanka.

Who can apply

  • check_circle Sri Lankan citizens (the award is for nationals applying from Sri Lanka)
  • check_circle Holders of a four-year bachelor's degree
  • check_circle Applicants with around one year of professional work experience after graduation
  • check_circle Open to most disciplines — but note clinical medicine is generally excluded
  • check_circle Strong academic record plus the other criteria set out by the Commission

Pro Counsellor Tip

"

The work-experience requirement trips people up. Fulbright is looking for applicants who can articulate a clear professional purpose, not fresh graduates with no track record. If you’re early in your career, the year (or more) of relevant experience isn’t a box to tick — it’s what makes your “why this, why now” story credible.

"

What it covers and the timeline

Fulbright awards are designed to be fully funded, typically covering the major costs of graduate study and exchange. The Commission also supports selected candidates through the US placement and standardised-testing process — a real advantage, since navigating US admissions and tests (such as the GRE/GMAT where required, and TOEFL/IELTS) is a significant task on its own.

The Master’s award typically opens its application in April with a deadline around 30 June, for study beginning in a later academic year — so you are planning well ahead. Confirm the exact current dates on the Fulbright Sri Lanka site.

Other Fulbright routes worth knowing

If the Master’s award isn’t the right fit, the Commission runs other programmes — including the Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship for mid-career professionals (a non-degree, professional-development year). Browse the full “Awards to Sri Lanka” list before deciding which one matches your stage and goals.

How to be competitive

Fulbright rewards a tight, authentic narrative over a padded CV. Strong applicants show academic excellence, a clear professional purpose, evidence of leadership or community contribution, and a credible plan to use the degree back in Sri Lanka. Start a year ahead: line up your references, your testing, and — above all — a study purpose that only you could have written.

The bottom line

Fulbright is hard to win and worth every hour of preparation. If you have the degree, the work experience, and a genuine purpose, it’s the single most prestigious funded route to a US master’s open to Sri Lankans. Apply early, apply honestly, and make your story specific.

Next steps

If you think you might be a fit, book a session. We’ll give you an honest read on your competitiveness and help you build the application — essays, references, and testing plan — around the official Fulbright timeline.
