Driving abroad as a Sri Lankan student: IDP, using & converting your licence

Can you drive on your Sri Lankan licence while studying abroad? Often yes — for a while — with an International Driving Permit. Here's how the IDP works, how long you can use your home licence, and when you must convert to a local one.

Whether you’ll be commuting in a car-dependent suburb or just want the freedom to drive on a road trip, this is a common question: can I drive abroad on my Sri Lankan licence? The answer is usually “yes, for a while” — if you prepare an International Driving Permit before you fly. Here’s how it works.

info

Driving rules differ by country (and even by state/province) and change over time. The guidance below is general — always confirm the current rules for your specific destination and how long you may drive on a foreign licence before you get behind the wheel.

The International Driving Permit (IDP)

An IDP is not a licence — it’s an official multilingual translation of your Sri Lankan driving licence. In Sri Lanka it’s issued by the Automobile Association of Ceylon (AA Ceylon) based on your valid full licence. Key points:

  • check_circle You must hold a valid full Sri Lankan licence (a learner's/temporary permit doesn't qualify) and be at least 18
  • check_circle You apply with the AA Ceylon — bring your licence, ID, photos, and the completed form, and pay the fee
  • check_circle Abroad, you generally carry BOTH your Sri Lankan licence AND the IDP together — the IDP alone isn't valid
  • check_circle Get it in Sri Lanka before you travel; it's far harder to arrange once you've left

Pro Counsellor Tip

"

Sort the IDP before you fly, even if you’re not sure you’ll drive. It’s cheap, quick, and valid for a set period — and it also doubles as a widely-accepted photo ID and a backup translation of your licence. Trying to arrange one from abroad is a needless hassle you can avoid with one visit to the AA Ceylon.

"

How long can you drive on your home licence?

This is where it varies a lot by country. Many places let you drive on your foreign licence (with the IDP) for an initial period after arrival — often several months up to a year — after which, if you’re a resident, you’re expected to get a local licence. As a student you may be considered a temporary visitor for a while, but don’t assume: check your destination’s exact rule, because driving on an expired entitlement can void your insurance and break the law.

When (and how) to convert to a local licence

If you’ll stay long-term or your destination requires it, you’ll convert to a local licence:

  • check_circle Some countries/states let you exchange a foreign licence directly; others require a theory and/or practical test
  • check_circle Sri Lanka isn't always on the 'direct exchange' list for every country, so you may need to take the local test
  • check_circle Factor in time and cost — booking tests and lessons can take weeks
  • check_circle Until you've converted (where required), stick to driving only within the period your foreign licence + IDP is valid

Planning to drive while studying abroad?

Ask us about your destination's rules — how long you can drive on your Sri Lankan licence, whether you need an IDP, and when you'd have to convert — so you stay legal and insured.

Insurance: the part you can’t ignore

Driving legally and being properly insured are two sides of the same coin. If you drive beyond the period your licence is valid, or without the IDP where it’s required, your insurance can be void — leaving you personally liable for an accident. Always confirm both the licensing rule and the insurance position before you drive, and never lend or borrow a car without checking the cover.

The bottom line

In most destinations you can drive on your full Sri Lankan licence for an initial period if you carry an International Driving Permit from the AA Ceylon alongside it — then convert to a local licence if you stay long-term or your destination requires it. Get the IDP before you fly, check your country’s exact rules, and keep your insurance valid.

Next steps

If driving will be part of your life abroad, tell us your destination and we’ll point you to the licence rules, the IDP process, and the conversion requirements so you’re road-legal from day one.
