Whether you’ll be commuting in a car-dependent suburb or just want the freedom to drive on a road trip, this is a common question: can I drive abroad on my Sri Lankan licence? The answer is usually “yes, for a while” — if you prepare an International Driving Permit before you fly. Here’s how it works.

The International Driving Permit (IDP)

An IDP is not a licence — it’s an official multilingual translation of your Sri Lankan driving licence. In Sri Lanka it’s issued by the Automobile Association of Ceylon (AA Ceylon) based on your valid full licence. Key points:

• check_circle You must hold a valid full Sri Lankan licence (a learner's/temporary permit doesn't qualify) and be at least 18
• check_circle You apply with the AA Ceylon — bring your licence, ID, photos, and the completed form, and pay the fee

How long can you drive on your home licence?

This is where it varies a lot by country. Many places let you drive on your foreign licence (with the IDP) for an initial period after arrival — often several months up to a year — after which, if you’re a resident, you’re expected to get a local licence. As a student you may be considered a temporary visitor for a while, but don’t assume: check your destination’s exact rule, because driving on an expired entitlement can void your insurance and break the law.

When (and how) to convert to a local licence

If you’ll stay long-term or your destination requires it, you’ll convert to a local licence:

• check_circle Some countries/states let you exchange a foreign licence directly; others require a theory and/or practical test
• check_circle Sri Lanka isn't always on the 'direct exchange' list for every country, so you may need to take the local test

• check_circle Until you've converted (where required), stick to driving only within the period your foreign licence + IDP is valid

Insurance: the part you can’t ignore

Driving legally and being properly insured are two sides of the same coin. If you drive beyond the period your licence is valid, or without the IDP where it’s required, your insurance can be void — leaving you personally liable for an accident. Always confirm both the licensing rule and the insurance position before you drive, and never lend or borrow a car without checking the cover.
